The impact of anger

Anger. All of us are very familiar with this word. Indeed, 99% of people in this world will definitely confess to having lost their temper at some point or the other (the remaining 1% are lying). So, what makes it such an all-pervasive phenomenon with such a great impact?

Let us first try to look at the reasons which spark anger in us. Most of us get angry when we are discriminated against; that's to say, when we are not given the right we deserve. Let's say you live in South Africa thirty years back and the color of your skin is dark, and you walk into a garden and someone says “sorry, you're not allowed here, this place is only for white-skinned people”. Obviously you have a reason to get angry. Let's say a child has brought a cake to school and as soon as he opens it, all his friends pounce upon it and gobble it up before he even get a chance to blink. Of course he is going to shout at them, though only for a few minutes! ;)

But, is not being given a right the only reason why we get angry? Many times we do get a little angry when we're offended. Like, when someone speaks in a harsh language to you or about something which is really close to your heart, you do get offended, you get angry at them. And then you might give them a dose of your bitter language too, to which the other person might get angrier, then there might be hits and blows, and so on.... which brings us to the next part.

Many a time, the period after anger is often one of regret. Yeah, more often than not, we often feel that we should not have gotten angry, that we should have been calm and composed. When we are angry, we lose control over ourselves and the impact that makes cannot always be repaired. We tend to utter words without much thought about its consequences or how it might affect the other person’s feelings. And in the end, people might not remember the exact words we told them but they shall never forget the way we made them feel.

It has rightly been said that getting angry is akin to holding on to a burning hot rod with the intention to hit the other person with it – we are the ones who get burnt. Nothing worthwhile has ever been achieved by getting angry – and the impact that anger makes is one that should always be carefully avoided. Violence has taken countless lives all over the world. We are all united by the universal zeal to be happy in each of our lives, and the way to achieving inner bliss is only through peace; never by letting loose our fury upon each other and allowing it to impact our lives.
